Hale Barn is situated in its own grounds on a working 56-acre farm, along the Weald Way and head of the Cuckmere Valley. This makes it the perfect location for exploring the South Downs Country Park, The High Weald, and the fabulous sunshine coast either by car, cycle or on foot.
If you are lucky enough you might just bump into the other farm residents, which include donkeys, ponies, rare breed pigs, pygmy goats, pedigree flocks of Lleyn and Ryeland sheep. If you are feeling energetic you can assist with feeding the free-range poultry and pigs.
There are other interesting activities beyond the barn. Cycle or walk the picturesque Cuckoo Trail – the former Cuckoo Line railway track that runs from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park. The coast at Eastbourne is approximately a 20-minute drive and Brighton a 35-minute drive. Fishing and golf are available locally.
Other great attractions include the Lewes Castle and Barbican House Museum. Lewes Castle is open all year round. It has a panoramic view from the top of the Keep. Next door to the castle is the Barbican House Museum with displays of the history of Sussex.
Charleston is a house, garden and art gallery located in the South Downs National Park. You can grab a bite to eat at the restaurant. Charleston was the home and country meeting place for the writers, painters, and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury group. The interior was painted by the artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, and together with their collection form a unique example of their decorative style.
If you enjoy a night on the town or some live performances, then Eastbourne Bandstand is the place to be. The current bandstand was built in 1935. There is no other bandstand like it in the United Kingdom. It has a unique semi-circular design and a blue domed roof. It has a main arena, middle and upper balconies and seats for 1,600. The Bandstand plays an important part in the musical entertainment on the south coast and is host to between 140 - 150 concerts per year.
