The Lake District and the surrounding region are perfect for 2 people wanting a quiet weekend break away from it all being exposed to the breathtaking natural beauty and host of historical sites that are nearby including the Scottish Hills, Gretna Green and Hadrian’s Wall.

The combination of peace and quiet, as well as being able to self-cater with the utmost in privacy are just some of the most common attracting factors that bring couples up to the Lake District for their retreat. Not only this but if you’re celebrating a special occasion or a honeymoon there is nothing better than relaxing in your own private hot tub as the sun goes down whilst drinking a bottle of champagne.

There are also a range of activities on offer such as cruises along beautiful lakes such as Lake Windermere, as well has historical walks and an array of local pubs each specialising in their own local food and ales for you to explore.

The Lake District and the word romantic have gone hand-in-hand for many years now. So why is this? Firstly being away from everything, just you and your partner as a couple enjoying the beautiful views or the coastal country walks.

It is one of the most popular places for people to visit on their holidays in the UK attracting around 17 million people each year. Places such as Gretna Green which are local to many of the lodges, cottages, hotels and log cabins we’ve reviewed here are known famously for their reputation for being romantic, with it being a getaway for 2 people in love to get married in secret if their parents sometimes didn’t approve of the plans.

Other areas of the Lakes are also becoming more and more of a desirable location for weddings bolstering the reputation that the Lakes have for being romantic. Couples also come up for other special romantic occasions such as anniversaries, engagements or honeymoons.

5 things to do for couples

The list of activities that are available to couples wanting to visit the Lakes is endless however we are going to review five slightly different alternatives to the normal things you’d expect to see a couple taking part in:

  • Alpacy Ever After – This is probably the last thing you’d expect to be able to do as a couple visiting the Lake District. However have you ever fancied taking a pair of Alpacas for a walk cross the beautiful countryside that surrounds the Lakes? With this company you can take these beautiful creatures for walks along the shores of Derwent Water. If you’re a history buff too nearby are the private grounds where Beatrix Potter spent many of her summers. Not only can you take these animals for a walk but they also love a paddle and you can even feed them. It’s the perfect activity either for 2 people or a family with young kids.
  • Keswick Brewing Company – If you’re after tasting the best local ales when you’re up in the Lake District as a couple one of the best places to go to is the Keswick Brewing Company. They are an intimate locally-sourced craft brewery who offer visits the chance to tour the factory to see how the craft ales are made from start to finish and of course this including sampling the beers for those of you who were wondering if this was included, you can relax now!
  • Go Ape – What better way to enjoy the outdoors in the Lake District than going to an outdoor activities park perfect for 2 people. This is located near Hawkshead and is perfect for couples, families and team-building corporate days out alike. You’ll be swinging through canopies as well as flying along zip wires. If you’re feeling a bit tired after all the physical activities they also offer forest segways so that you can browse the forest in style and give your legs a rest.
  • Theatre by the Lake – If you fancy something a bit different there is a famous theatre located just off the shores of Derwent Water. Hosting up to 9 productions a year, this theatre provides the best in arts and performance in a tranquil, one of a kind settings. The productions performed here stretch over numerous categories so it’s a perfect for a couple no matter what your taste is.
  • Rookin House – If you’re 2 people looking for a place that offers a whole array of different activities or even a small family or you’re having your stag or hen do up in the Lake District, this place is perfect for you. It offers activities such as Bowling, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Archery, Indoor Karting, Assault Cause, Horse Riding, Pony Trekking and many more activities all at competitive prices. It is located between Keswick and Penrith and not far from the beautiful Lake Ullswater.

Making your cabin perfect for 2

Although many of the lodges we’ve reviewed are perfect for 2 people, such as a couple wanting a break away from it all. There are additional measures you can take to make sure that it ticks all the boxes. Especially in the winter to create a bit of ambience candles are perfect to add to the mood, and in the summer especially with your own private patio alfresco dining is a must.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion a dip in the hot tub or spa can go perfectly with a glass of champagne and some chocolates. Many of the places we’ve reviewed are self-catering so it’s always best when you get there to get accustomed to your new temporary log cabin, cottage or lodge, knowing where everything is and how the stoves work as most of them are wood burning stoves.

Itinerary for the perfect mini break for 2 in the lakes

For there a perfect weekend break or getaway for 2 people in the Lake District, there are a few things you’ve got to make sure you do. Firstly is venturing away from the cottage, log cabin or accommodation and taking in the local scenery, whether you’re near the shores of Derwentwater or going on a cruise down the beautiful Lake Windermere.

Why self-catering is perfect?

Self-catering is perfect, not only does this mean you can choose what you want to eat, you can also choose where you want to eat and at what time. It also adds to the whole feel of the holiday being independent and away from it all. Just the two of you on your getaway enjoy the peace and tranquillity that is sometimes hard to find amongst the hassle, chaos and stress of modern life. Being able to eat when and where you want also means you can go out for a walk to a local river and have a picnic alongside the river or have a few snacks on your private patio whilst watching the beautiful sunset go down over the Lakes.
